I feel exactly the same way about mine! I will also never have children, but my dogs are my dog-ters. My mother is grandma for them, and she loves her grand-dog-ters! :) They get birthday and Christmas presents, and grandma brings them treats all the time.

My husband and I chose never to have children. I have never had the maternal instinct for children, but I have a great deal of nuturing instinct for animals. I understand animals a great deal more then I understand humans.
I only go so far in treating my animals as children. They are taught by way of gentle training, enviromental enrichment, and a good upbringing, just like anyone would want for their children. But my pets are better behaved then most children.
I draw the line at believing that animals are little people with fur. Cats are cats and should be treated as cats. Dogs are dogs and should be treated as dogs. As a dog obedience instructor I see too many dogs who have been treated like human children and this confuses the dog. These are the dogs who have not been shown their role in their family pack by their humans and that leads to problems for the family and the dog, with few exceptions.
I talk to my animals A LOT. I talk to them using complete sentences, no cutesy baby-talk. I know that by talking out loud to him my Border Collie understands a lot of what I say. I can tell him to go wait by the car as I'm packing up for dog classes, and he does. A few nights ago my neighbour and his son were in our yard. Jay said to Stoan, "go pee on the bush", and Stoan went and peed on the bush.
I find it insulting to animal-kind to see them as humans, or treat them like humans. Animals have all the good qualities, and none of the bad, and that makes them better then humans.

Yes. When my sons were little they would get into trouble and they always said, you love Doobie {my doxie} more than us, he never gets in trouble! So not true, my sons are the highlight of my life, it's just that Doobie never did anything wrong lol. Besides, your kids grow up and leave home, your pets stay with you forever. Doobie lived 17 wonderful years. Now my sons are grown and I have more "kids" to fill my life, I have so much love to give to them, yeah, I do treat my dogs and cats like family...because they are!!!

Yes! They do! We all seem like there is a connection, and know whats going on. Its hard to explain though. Plus, they will misbehave every now and then. So this means I have 3 daughers and 4 sons!! Hee hee. They are great children. They never back talk (exept Tia sometimes =P). I love them!!!

Yes, I love them very much! They think they are people! We let my 7 year old quarter horse pony out loose sometimes to graze out in the front yard (our house is far from the road and she is trained to stay in the yard) and after she has been out for an hour or two, she will come to our back door and bump her nose gently on the door as if knocking. When we come to open the door, her adorable face perks up and looks at us as if to say, "can I have my apple now? Oh, yeah and I've been out for over an hour it is time for you to put me back out now."

Absolutely, no question about it. We have made the decision not to have human children, so our pets fill that niche. We talk about them, brag about them, and always find something about them that is amusing. We adore and respect them, and I can't imagine my life without my animals.
Having said that, I am NOT one of those people who needs to share what Charlie Kitty did with all my friends and co-workers, and regale them with pictures. They are safe from that with me, but they know where I stand on animal rights and on pets.

I love my animals very much, and before I had children I definately felt that they were like my kids. However, now that I a child, I understand that the care and responsibility we have for our pets is not really on the same level as what we have for our offspring... Even though we love and care for both our children and our pets, I believe that *nothing* can compare to the love you can feel for a human child.
