My husband is 35, 5 nights out of 7 he gets up in the middle of the night and has a glass of water. He has done this his whole life.
My 10 month old is still up ever 2-3 hours to nurse all night (and all day). And it doesn't bug me. (He's 28lbs, of course he's hungry during the night. And no he isn't fat you can see his ribs)
Good for you for respecting your child!

We adopted my son at 6 months old and he was sleeping through the night, and is still a great sleeper at 3 years old. He's only woken up in the middle of the night a handful of times.
Our biological daughter, on the other hand, has been a horrible sleeper since day 1. By the time she was 18months, she was mostly sleeping through the night, but she still usually wakes up at least once or twice, and she's over 2 now. My hubby didn't sleep through the night until he was 3, and I didn't sleep through the night until I was 18 months, so we knew we weren't going to hit the genetic lottery in that case.
You can get the book by Ferber on sleep issues with children. It didn't fix all of our problems, but it greatly reduced the frequency that my daughter awoke.

My first child didn't sleep more than 2 hours at a time until we night-weaned at 18 months. My second is 9 weeks and has already slept 7 hours straight a few times. Every kid is different. Definately don't CIO. Have you read the No Cry Sleep Solution? It's got some good ideas and many people swear by it although it didn't work with my daughter.

I have 3 kids...2 older daughters and a younger son.
My girls started sleeping through the night by the time they were a year old (around 9-10 months).
My son, however is 16 months and still wakes up 3-5 times a night.

Your baby will not sleep through the night until you use some sort of method to help him learn to settle himself back down into sleep. As a mother of 6, I have used Ferber's method and didn't like it. I now have a baby almost 3 years old however that doesn't sleep through the night now and since she's mobile, I have to get up and put her back to bed and fight with her to stay in her bed. It would have been much easier when she was still in a crib and couldn't get out to roam around the house.

My daughter began to sleep through the night off and on at 6 weeks. By 3 months, she was sleeping straight through every night.
