Willie Thrower was the first black QB in the NFL.......He died at age 71 of a heart attack.......They say the first starter QB was Fritz Pollard but I'm not sure on that one.......Can't help but smile over Willie's last name.......Is that befitting a QB or was it someone's idea????..........CAT

Willie Thrower was the first black QB to play in a game in 1953. After that it was Marlin Briscoe in the AFL the the Denver Broncos in 1968. Then it was James Harris in 1969 for the Buffalo Bills and he was the first to START a NFL game at QB. Joe Gilliam was the starter for 5 games in 1974 when the players went on strike and James Harris led the LA Rams to the 1974 NFC championship. In 1978, Doug Williams was the first black QB to be drafted in the first round by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. In 1979, he led the Buccaneers to the NFC championship game against the LA Rams. He left the NFL in 1983 to play for the new USFL. He returned to the NFL in 1986 with the Washington Redskins as a backup. In 1987,he was named the starter for the playoffs and led the Redskins to victory in Super Bowl XXII. Unfortunately, the Redskins released him after the 1988 season based on injuries and he retired from football

Willie Thrower, the NFL's first Black quarterback died of a heart attack at his home in New Kensington, PA. He was 71.

Thrower's history-making feat was in 1953 when he played in a game for the Chicago Bears.

I found a lot of answers...here is one.

Apparently the first black QB to start an NFL game was Fritz Pollard. According to the Boston Globe, Pollard started at QB for the Akron Pos in 1923 and took them to the championship.
