I am a certified Reiki Master/Teacher in five different forms.

Level 1 hands on healing.

Level II hands on or distance healing.

Level III means you are a master, and you are given the Master symbol, and are taught how to pass attunements to others.

If you do not want to teach Reiki; there is no need to receive level III training.

The person who said that Level III opens the central channel is wrong.

I have seen Level Is who could throw around more energy than most of the 8 reiki masters I had for teachers.

It depends oh which teacher you get your training from. There are two different schools of teaching. Some of the students from Phyllis have adopted a different way of teaching Reiki. If your talking about the Reiki Alliance then your talking about the master level of Reiki. The obvious advantage of being a master is you can now teach other people Reiki. If your at Level 3 with William Rands teaching, then you have attained the practitioner level which means you have been attuned to the master symbol but haven't been taught how to teach others Reiki. I've been taught by both schools and I don't see any difference in the energy. William Rand also certifies the upper levels of Reiki and offers an additional level called Karuna Reiki. There are more symbols to learn and use.

As part of the master course, usually the Third Degree, students become a Reiki "master" through the third initiation; they learn how to initiate students and have the option of teaching Reiki courses themselves. The student learns a further "master" level symbol in this course as well as the method of attuning others. In some cases the third level is broken into smaller stages of attunements from the teacher; the attunements for the first, second, and third level may also be administered in stages. A teacher has completed practical training when told that he or she has the ability to attune others to all degrees and has been given the final fourth Reiki Master symbol that is used in attunements.

It is up to students how many levels they want to complete. The courses are sequential, and can be expensive, especially the third (master) level. Often a teacher will require time in between one course and another (during which the student is expected to apply new learning before taking the next degree). Before offering Reiki treatments to the public, a student is often advised to take a second-degree course. It usually costs $150 to be "attuned" to reiki level I and $500 for level II. To become an official, recognized reiki master, one pays about $10,000 (within The Reiki Alliance, masters of other systems have varying prices) for the "attunement" and training process and also learns to teach and give attunements to others.

The considerable variation in the speed and method of teaching has caused some dispute. While courses are now advertised that say they can teach Reiki in just a few short days, traditionalists point out that for much of history, Reiki was kept a closely-guarded secret and was only taught to people who were considered safe and "worthy". The traditional view is that Reiki is so powerful that it can be abused by those who have not spent time developing a feel and intuition for the craft. To this extent, some believe that the "truest" Reiki is still guarded and taught slowly by only a few "genuine" Reiki masters. Students on the traditional path may be made to wait a year or more before being allowed to learn stage two, and thereafter many more years before being taught the Master level. Traditionalists maintain that any method that teaches Reiki "quickly" cannot be teaching the real thing, because there is no substitute for experience and patient mastery of the art.

Rev. Two Bears' answer is the best one in the list so far. The Japanese energetic system (whose properties were considered when formulating the system of Reiki) has nothing whatsoever to do with chakras or central channels.

The benefits of Reiki III training are twofold:

* you learn one (maybe two - depending of the system you learn) new symbol and how to pass attunements on to other people.

* you learn more techniques to help you and your students/clients connect to the energy (though this is not the case in all styles of Reiki).

You can read about the Japanese energetic system here:

reiki 3 opens your central channel, the arm channels and the palm centers, yet more. thus more "chi" flows through you. that's the basic benefit: the more chi running through you the better for both you and the "client". i'm reiki 3 in usui and a number of other reiki systems. without going into great detail, since that has already been accomplished above, i will merely mention to you thay you can be attuned to ("basic") usui reiki 3 as competently, and far less expensively, by reviewing the site: http://www.olegabrielsen.com see audio empowerments. and e-mail him about availability of the (basic) usui reiki level 3 attunement. you'll know what i mean once you view the site. alternatively, you could opt for "full empowerment" in "new usui reiki", which would, in essence, also attune you to basic usui reiki 3, as far as i can determine. in any event e-mail him with questions. my usui, usui tibetan, and "sai baba" master level attunements were experienced through the "usual traditional methods". they are NOT the only way to be competently attuned. additionally, that site offers other attunements which are highly beneficial, and lend new meaning to the word "affordable". perhaps, unlike many others, mr. gabrielsen is more interested in having many people be able to become attuned than he is with "becoming rich". i offer workshops on a donation basis, or even for free, if appropriate, in order to help get the energy out there. each person attuned helps to raise the vibrational level on this planet just that helpful little bit more. p.s. to the *omniscient* rev. two bears, answer below---in theory what i say is correct. interestingly, if you come to an attunement with a very potent energy flow/field already, you "get more out of the attunement". a "master" who had a meagre energy flow starting up could well end up with less of a flow than a "wizardly" 1st degree. thus, reiki is very "fair".

It's hard to top Anton Chigurh or The Terminator. How about Mel Gibson as William Wallace in Braveheart? :)
