its motives are good but it is stupidly misused.

What concerns me about PC is that it seems to create a division rather than a unity. If i grow up fearing that I must not say this or that, do this or that, then I fear the differences between cultures and don't mix. If I don't mix, I don't understand and the only knowledge I can acquire is the blown up examples of others that I read in the over-exaggerated press and I will be ignorant. Mix, learn for yourself. There is good and bad in all. I also wonder if the PC brigade bring out some of the more ridiculous notions to ensure we do not unite.

Political correctness is a blight on the US...I would much rather let some idiot say what he feels. At least you know where he is coming from and what he is thinking. PC just forces that person to keep it to himself until it bubbles out in a more negative way. We have turned into a country of people who are so sensitive about everything and just waiting to be offended. We need to suck it up, toughen up, let people say whats on their mind even if its not what you want to hear, and get on with life. You can not legislate morality or racial acceptance and I would rather know what someone is thinking then to wonder if he is a ticking time bomb ready to explode.

It's terrible. It flies in the face of free speech, which was a founding principle of our nation, and all free nations.
Further, it doesn't truly encourage people to be more green or less racist. It simply threatens them to keep from expressing their feelings if they are more racist and less green. In other words, it keeps true thoughts hidden and allows things to fester below the surface. So, in addition to being a threat to a free society, the political correctness movement also threatens the long-term success of the very ideals it seeks to promote.
It is the ultimate tool of rule by force and majoritarianism. Ultimately, it can be a tremendous tool to subjugate the very minorities it is ostensibly designed to support.
Political correctness is a hideous disaster.

As you point out it has its good points. Like any ideology it can be manipulated for bad ends. Equality for women, for example, seems to have become equality for middle class women in the workplace. Not equality for those millions of women who are genuinely low paid and exploited. I can't remember when I last saw a middle class "feminist" on a picket line showing her solidarity with her less fortunate sisters.
Having said that it's not political correctness to want equality of gender and race. It's about creating a better world.

You've listed the good points and you're partly right. But it shouldn't stifle debate or argument, just ensure that a courteous standard of language is used.
I don't think there's any problem discussing race or immigration and I'm happy to listen to views that disagree with mine. I switch off when terms like nig*ger, paki, wog are used. That's not being PC, just showing respect.
The "PC gone mad" idea is kept alive by racists in organisations like BNP and Daily Mail - they use lies like "Baa Baa Blue Sheep" and a "ban on Christmas" to undermine attempts for people of different cultures to work together.
Most people who say polical correctness infringes their free speech, usually mean their 'freedom' to express hatred in abusive terms. I'll happily curtail that 'freedom'.

Mostly bad - unless it is dealing with truly tactless language - but taking away parts of language because of some tenuous connotations doesn't help us communicate.
