Just remember:

heterogeneous there are different looking parts

homogeneous everything looks the same

An apple certainly has different looking parts so its heterogeneous.

CO is a compound because it is 2 different elements combined chemically.

an apple is heterogeneous, and it's not exactly a mixutre, the seeds and stem make it heterogeneous, the part you typically eat though is generally homogeneous (with the exception of the skin)...and yes carbon monoxide is a compound
