I always have a few "safety stories" to lighten the mood. I have a few stories that are guaranteed laughs and can alleviate any situation. However, if the joke I told is unintentionally offensive and ticks everyone off, I just walk away with a smile or if necessary apologize. It is important that they don't see you flinch, just keep the air of confidence and talk to a friend later on about how you absolutely flopped! Those are the funniest stories!

If you can get away with saying this "Come on it's the only joke I have ~ give me a break I have never been good at jokes" that might work.
If the people know you real well you might try "Well it's the only one I have left you guys already know all the rest of them."
