because you are very interested in the show you are watching, you want to hear what the people are saying on that show so its kind of like when theres a glare in the tv. Sometimes you see that glare but most of the time you look past it and just watch the show. Then you get to the commercials that are not interesting or that you saw it a million times so you either dont want to hear it over again or you just simply dont care. When you dont care your ear tends to pick up something that is intetresting. Your family.

you are paying more attention to the show than your surroundings, during the commercials you quit paying attention to the tv. so you can hear what is going on around you.

it sounds like U are watching way too much TV not to be funny or anything but you may wanna spend more time with ppl and Less with TV just to get your self reintroduced to society

This happens when i work crossword puzzles, you are more focused on what you are watching & tune evrything else out.
