60% who you know, how do you get promoted in the first place if you "know" none of the seniors/bosses,

my thinking is most immediate bosses prefer someone they know so they will be more comfortable working with them.

An immediate boss will look for "a follower" so if he knows you not, how can he be sure you are a follower.

it is a combination of merit and politics. merit alone won't hack it except in sports and such. michael jordan made so much money mainly because he made so many points. but business is a little different. the group effort can suffer from one brilliant but ornery dude. some people just don't get it and always lose.

It's both. It depends on the work place. Some places actually give you promotions based on how well you've done. But most places don't and it's who ya know.

u hav asked to touching que.
this shows that u hav been dropped many a times.
this is totally wrong that promotions r given on merit.
it is now based on cast system . a boss just give pro. to their same cast people. pro is also based on people strong personality(pahunch)

This is not an either or situation. I'd say it is both. Every company is going to lean certain ways but for all of them, it is both.
