In most of the higher and and High Tech jobs, yes they do prefer to hire married people if the candidates are above the marriageble age. Actually these companies do not want their highly talented employees to leave the companies......and the research has shown that the happily married employees provide more stability and consistency to the organization. Also these companies have pro-family policies...e.g they will have free vacations once a year, children allowancw, maternity like etc etc. These Companies "Hire to Retire"

But most other companies do not really care whether the employees are married or not....in fact they don't even hire for long term perspective....and they dont mind believing in "Hire & Fire".

Yes, I expect they do, because a married person is more stable. To be blunt, a married MAN is more stable; a married woman may decide at any time that she would prefer to stay home and raise her own kids instead of sending them to day care.

However, such discrimination is strictly against the law.
