you have 3 tanks, a 3 litre tank a 5 litre tank and an 8 litre tank and you have to get one tank to contain exactly 4 litres of water and you can only empty the tank COMPLETELY, how do you do it?

fill 8L tank and pour out into 5L tank
now have 3L in 8L tank
fill 3L tank and pour into 8L tank
now have 6L in 8L tank
empty 5L tank
pour 8L tank into 5L tank
now have 1L in 8L tank
fill 3L tank and pour into 8L tank
now have 4L in 8L tank

That should not be too hard. You fill the 3 l tank and empty it in the 5 l tank. Then you fill the 3 l tank again and empty it in the 8 l tank. Then you repeat the operation, but this time you empty the 3 l tank in the 5 l tank until you fill it (2 l) and then in the 8 l tank (the remainder, i.e. 1 l).
This way you will have a full 5 l tank and 4 l in the 8 l tank.
