The internal combustion engine. It is found world-wide, from the smallest generator providing electricity for some hut to the largest transportation engines. Its very useful.
The down side is that it consumes fossil fuels, pollutes and isn't really very efficient. Most of its energy is lost as heat.
The socio-economic impact of it all is staggering.....

Louis Pasteur and his work concerning pasteurization. Pasteurization cuts down on bacteria that is likely to cause illness.

Nicolas Tesla and his work on alternating current. This has helped us to live in the world as we know it.
