I like Russian fairytales in general, they are really dark with unexpected twists and usually not a traditional happy ending.

Classic Aesop fables are good too.

Shrek, by William Steig

Its message is different from all the other ones: all the tales' characters only care about beauty, and love enters by the eyes.
In Shrek, ugliness is a mere concept that doesn't influence their actions. Heart is what really matters.

Rapunzel is my favourite as Rumpelstiltskin (spelt incorrectly) finally is outwitted by Rapunzel using her hair as a way for the Prince to save her.

Such a charming story.
