In England, a minimum of once per term - although many schools choose to have them twice per term. Any more would be very unusual indeed.

In Ohio, it is legally required to hold a fire drill every calendar month that school is in session. Even if the school is only in session for one day that month, it is required to have a fire drill. Years ago I worked for an administrator who was very "innovative" and would hold a fire drill for staff members after school and count it on his documentation sheet! He also would ring the bell at dismissal so as not to waste class time or if he had waited until the end of the month and the weather was bad.

It depends on what your state's education code mandates.

In California: California Education Code, Sections 32001-32004. This section mandates each school site with 2 or more classrooms and 50 or more students to have a fire alarm system. The Code requires monthly fire drills for elementary and intermediate-level students, and twice-yearly fire drills for secondary students.

I know that we do not have drills every month in our school, but we are a year-round school, we have about 3 drills a year.

interesting. in my school, with over 1700 pupils, we have fire drills whenever somebody pulls the alarm. for some reason they really love doing that. i'm not sure when the last time we had a serious fire drill was.

I was a high school teacher in Ohio. We were required to have a fire drill once a month.

I teach in Texas. We have a fire drill once every six weeks grading period. I do not know if that is state mandated or a local policy.

Each state is different, but I would assume once a month except for the first month of school when it is done more often. Call your local fire inspector. He or she would know exactly.

In my state (South Carolina) it is once a month. My current school usually does it on the last school day of the month. At a former school, I think we had two all year - they were so slack.

I always loved those drills . . . gave me a chance to walk around in the fresh air and see all the kids from the other classes. Refreshing break from scholastics.
