We are a Republic.
Democracy:
The chief characteristic and distinguishing feature of a Democracy is: Rule by Omnipotent Majority. In a Democracy, The Individual, and any group of Individuals composing any Minority, have no protection against the unlimited power of The Majority. It is a case of Majority-over-Man.
A Republic:
A Republic, on the other hand, has a very different purpose and an entirely different form, or system, of government. Its purpose is to control The Majority strictly, as well as all others among the people, primarily to protect The Individual’s God-given, unalienable rights and therefore for the protection of the rights of The Minority, of all minorities, and the liberties of people in general. The definition of a Republic is: a constitutionally limited government of the representative type, created by a written Constitution--adopted by the people and changeable (from its original meaning) by them only by its amendment--with its powers divided between three separate Branches: Executive, Legislative and Judicial. Here the term "the people" means, of course, the electorate.

The United States is a "Constitutionally Limited Republic".
The founding fathers were adamantly against forming a democracy because they knew it was a form of tyranny.
Democracy is unlimited majority rule, which means whoever has the greater numbers at the moment makes the rules regardless of individual rights. Essentially it is mob rule.
As a constitutionally limited republic our laws are limited by the constitution of the United States, protecting individual rights.

We are a Republic, which means we aree governed by laws. Democracy is not any part of government, it is a term that is used to make the people think we are.

Democratic Republic.
Democratic in the sense that majority vote decides the rule of the day. Republic in the sense that once the rules are in place, even those who voted against the rules are still served in the best possible capacity. In short, ALL have rights.
Not saying this is how it is in the U.S. but this was the system set up.

The USA is an elitist dictatorship masquerading as a democracy. It is the most corrupt govn't in history. It is an organized crime nation, exploiting its world supremacy to rape and plunder the natural resources of any country it wants. All it needs to do to fool the public is to create a pre-text for war. Hence...9/11...
