Hamsters are a good beginner pet because they are fairly easy to care for. They require a weekly cage cleaning and no grooming. They are friendly and easily tamed. Hamsters are nocturnal creatures that may on occasion bite if bothered while sleeping. Remember that since hamsters are nocturnal, they make noise at night! Hamsters do show some recognition and will eagerly look for treats when approached. Hamsters are mildly active delighting you with their housekeeping and exercise wheel activity. They are hardy pets requiring few visits to the vet. Hamsters have a lifespan of about 3 years. We have found that Golden Hamsters and Black Bear Hamsters seem to be the easiest to tame.

In general we would say about 2 years. Like humans some may die a little earlier (say 18 months) and some may go on and on and on. We have had three hamsters live until they were 3 years old and we have heard of a few living longer again. Each hamster is an individual.

The most widely quoted answer is 2-3 years. However, in my own experience, I had a teddy bear (longhaired) hamster that lived about 2-1/2 years, but I had a few dwarf Siberian hamsters that only lived about 10 months. None of my hamsters was afflicted with any visible disease and it seemed to me that they all died of old age--natural causes.

The average hamster will live for aproximately 2 years. Dwarf hamsters have a tendency to live a little longer than hamsters like the Golden hamster.

With the experience to having around 5 hamsters I can tell you this:
They live around 2-4 years.
They will live longer if you keep their bedding cedar or other wood shavings and NOT newspaper. Newspaper ink causes CANCER in small pets. The prolonged exposure can give them terrible tumors. Before my family discovered this, our last newspaper raised hamster died of brain cancer.
Hope this helps.

Hampsters live for about 2 years depending on how good they are taken care of. If it a dwarf hampster, they probably aren't going to live for very long anyway if you have children in the house. If you have a gerbil or a fairly large hampster, they will live ffrom 1 1/2 years to about 3 years.
