Ella Fitzgerald is by far the best vocal musician, but as for versatility, even though I don't own any of his music any more I think I would have to go with Prince. He can play any instrument he picks up and with every new album he puts out he always has a fresh sound.

i dont think it suitable to say some one is all time great in any fields including music,but it is fair to say they are people who gave their best to music at their times,if i am asked i would go for
eric clapton.it is difficult to choose from so many.
