Is TiVo worth it? What kind of features does it have?

TiVo is very cool. Being able to record the shows you want to see while you can't be in the house is awesome! Pausing live TV is great, too. I use it all the time when I have to chase the dog around the house but don't want to miss parts of the show I'm watching on TV. TiVo is also cooler than DVR, and it is easier to use, in my personal experience. It's friendlier and has good features.

Tivo is definitely better than NOT having any type of DVR.

Tivo is also superior to all the "non-Tivo" DVR options from cable companies or satellite companies, based on my experience and reports from others.

Its important to get the right Tivo based on how you receive TV at your house, however, to get the best setup. If you have Digital Cable, the new Tivo Series 3 is the best because it can completely replace your cable box and record 2 shows at once, even in HD. But its still very expensive because its brand new.

There are special Tivo boxes for people using DirecTV which are integrated with DirectTV receivers.

There are also "Dual Tuner" Tivo boxes which work well with Cable users and also allow you to record 2 shows at once.

The big question is whether the upgrade to Tivo from a non-Tivo DVR from your cable company is worth it to you. Generally the monthly fees are higher on a Tivo box than a non-Tivo box from your cable company, and you have to buy the equipment up-front versus leasing it from your cable provider.

You may want to try getting your cable company or satellite company's DVR offering first, see if you like it, and then decide if you want to upgrade to a better DVR. You can return the Cable company's DVR back to them at any time and stop paying for it (Satellite companies may require a longer-term commitment, however).

Good luck.

I would say yes. It has recording features so that you can play pause or rewind any live show, or record it for viewing later. It has other features like parental control but that about summarizes it. If you dont want a genuine "TIVo most cable and sattelite providers now have DVR (Digital Video Recorder) boxes that are avaible in subscription, contact your cable or sattelite provider for more details. Hope this helps, Brodster
