We are doing a science project on how to tell the diff between salt and sugar w/o tasting. one way is to boil, freeze, and disolve. Does any one have any info on how to tell the diff or know of any web sites to research this on. thanks

Use solubility as a distinction.
Common salt is inorganic compound.
Table sugar is an organic compound.

Use a solvent like n-hexane, diethyl ether .
Sugar dissolves and salt doesnot.

So you got the answer without tasting!!

That's easy.
You can tell the difference just by looking at it. Sugar is shiny and sparkly and almost fluffy in appearance while salt is a dull white. Take a small amount of each and put it on your kitchen counter and examine them closely. The difference is really very obvious to me.
