Of course, I believe there are people who don't like social events, crowds, etc... (I am one of them)... but I wonder if there are really people who don't have ANY friends, not even one, and live as hermits, not connecting with society at all.

I'm sure there is a man sitting in a hut in a remote village somewhere, who hasn't seen anyone for the last 20 years or so. He hunts for his food, and um, stars at a wall to amuse himself.

you have to connect in some way, i suppose...
but then 'society' could have a different meaning altogether for those types...
there are lots of people who don't have any real sharing and supportive friendships..........

there must be. they must become pretty odd over time. that reminds me of the crazy character ben gun in "treasure island." pirates buried treasure on the island and left ben gun behind. years later when a ship arrived looking for treasure and found ben gun. robert lewis stephenson created a wonderful "mad man" in ben gun.
