for moss to grow you have to have shade, food, and water. Get rid of any one and you will eliminate the moss. You can't get rid of the dirt, you don't want to get rid of the shade, so get rid of the water.

My soil is really compacted. Every winter the whole backyard is solid moss. This year I started planting grass foot by foot. I found that if the soil is moist you can actually scrape the moss off with a hoe. The places I loosened the soil and planted with grass seed didn't grow moss back this winter. You might have to scrape the grass with the moss, loosen the soil and reseed that portion of your yard. But don't try it until the nights stay at 50 degrees or warmer.

The soil may be compacted, so you may need to aerate the soil or the PH may need adjusting, application of pulverized lime should work.

I had this problem and these methods worked for me.
