Yes, it is. But it has nothing to do with text speak. Notice how many questions are formulated extremely poorly. There's a reason for that. I was shocked to learn that kids today get to watch entertainment movies during class, and they don't even have to write reports about them! Schools today are just glorified babysitting services. They don't even TRY to teach the basics anymore.

I don't think I'd blame it on the education system. Teachers expect proper grammar and, I hope, spelling.
I think it has more to do with what people are consuming outside of school. Text messaging, IMing, video games, computer games, etc. are influencing how people communicate online more than school.
Maybe people think that since yahoo answers is online they can type like that.
I don't read the answers that are written in text speak either. Can't get through them!

Bit of a hypocrit you are. Only looked at two of your other questions and they both contain text speak in their wording. Was you educated by the education system you're critisizing?
My grammar ain't what it should be but then i don't socialize in circles that care too much for grammar.
I'll let you know my opinion on the education system in 15 years or so. After it's had its hands on my kid. In the meantime, no, i didn't realize there was a spellcheck. My experience with those is that they are far from perfect and being old school ... well, it's a style thing to read your own writing proper after you've written it. Innit?

1. Unions. 2. Unions. 3. Unions. 4. Unions. Want an education about what is wrong with our educational system, watch the movie, "Waiting for Superman." It is an eye opener! “POLITICAL CORRECTNESS is a doctrine fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the CLEAN END.” --- Former US Senator from Wyoming, Alan K. Simpson Republican since before she was born… and PROUD of it.

Actually the endemically low standard of English on here is a constant irritant to me, and no...I am not talking about the occasional error or spelling mistake.

Whether it is right or wrong, the fact is we live in a meritocratic society and people who do not write or speak well are judged accordingly.

No, it also bugs me. I always use the spell check. I think you look dumb if you post anything on here and it is not spelled properly, also the grammar is bad.

I agree that the bad spelling or lack of ability to use the spell-checker is annoying, but I'm a teacher and I know it is not all the fault of the education system.

I do agree with you, bugs the hell out of me!

But I must be a bit pedantic and point out a few grammatical errors...

"is" should be capitalised (Is)
"text speak" should probably be in inverted commas.
"dont" has an apostrophe (don't...twice).
"yahoo" is a proper name and spelt Yahoo!
"!!" no need for two exclamation marks.
"i", should be capitalised (I)
"??" no need for two question marks.

For the benefit of those using American English, we in the UK and Canada spell 'realise' with an 's' not 'z'.
