Schumacher was a perfectionist, a really intelligent and clever driver and he has a natural talent that can be compared to Michael Jordan, Roger Federer or Tiger Woods. He won races and championships because he knew how to win and he knew how to get every tenth of a second out of the car to go faster.

Alesi was an average driver, with some talent and a certain character, however, he has never been consistent and his best years were those spent at Ferrari.

Schumacher has been perfect in every aspect, he has always known how to turn a bad situation into one that would give him an advantage and has always been able to use his talent and experience over drivers who were less fortunate.

The problem is that these two drivers were driving in two different leagues. Schumacher is a legend and he will never be fergotten, Alesi has already been fergotten a bit within the Formula One circus and not many will remember him in 25 years or 50.

Possibly Michael Schumacher. I had a `soft spot' for Jean Alesi, but he could be a bit of a `wild man' in a car. However, circa 1988, I watched in awe from the barriers at Monaco as most of the cars were slipping and sliding through Casino Square at Monaco, but Alain Prost seemed to be in complete control.
Still, who am I to judge, the pre-pubescent kids who have never been closer than the TV in their living room to a race and who pontificate about F1-related matters here, are the real experts; I bow to superior wisdom.

Schumacher hands down. Alesi was too wild, he admitted that himself. The most successful way of driving is be smooth all round a lap, every lap. Alesi was a showman in a way with amazing car control, but was in the wrong era. A lot like Gilles Villeneuve (Jacques dad for the young ones).

While I always liked Alesi, and thought he was a good driver... he's not in the same league as Schumacher. You are talking about one driver which was a good driver in his era, and on occassion, someone that would compete for a podium, versus someone that not only competed for a podium everytime out, but was a real threat to win every time he was on the grid (to the tune of 7 world championships).

Also, I must comment... entering a turn sideways is not the hallmark of a good driver. A good driver does what they can to preserve speed, where excessive sliding and getting sideways scrubs the very speed you need to turn a fast lap.

Jean Alesi has fans all aross the world not because he has won world titles but because of his consistent driving all through his career. He has just won one race at the 1995 Canadian Grand prix. Michael Schumacher is a seven time f1 champion and has won 91 race and has many records. So definetely the better driver is Michael schumacher.

Alesi by ar Schumacher was fast but lost concentration at least once each race weekend! Alesi was slower but more precise!

I think I have gone absolutely crazy to say this, but, at the peak of their game, Schumacher was way better. MS was truly a great driver behind the wheel, and one of the few drivers that can/could drive the car to its limit in the rain (Senna will always remain the true Rain Master); this, in my mind, will forever be overshadowed by what he did throughout his career in order to win.

Are you kidding? the better pilot is the one who wins. Schumi, I think, was the one to become world champ, and repeatefly. Alesi just won one race. This is my answer.
