No, January the 2nd is not a declared holiday. There will be some not working in Washington D.C. on that day because of an official funeral, but it is not a holiday.

Yes it is because he died. Like most government officials that now have the day off, and are probably ecstatic about it, some of us need to pick up the slack. I am tired and have a life, but now I must work and not think about the day of mourning for us Americans, I must work. After all isn't it "us" that keep this country of ours running!, or the "US". Sorry I am tired and my family misses me and I think I am going to cry on the first day of 2007. I CAN CRY IF I WANT TO RIGHT?? NO MATTER THE GENDER!!!

National Day of Mourning for President Gerald R. Ford
A Proclamation by the President of the United States of America

As a further mark of respect to the memory of Gerald R. Ford, the thirty-eighth President of the United States, NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of America, by the authority vested in me by the Constitution and laws of the United States, in honor and tribute to the memory of Gerald R. Ford, and as an expression of public sorrow, do appoint Tuesday, January 2, 2007, as a National Day of Mourning throughout the United States. I call on the American people to assemble on that day in their respective places of worship, there to pay homage to the memory of President Ford. I invite the people of the world who share our grief to join us in this solemn observance.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this twenty eighth day of December in the year of our Lord two thousand six, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-first.

GEORGE W. BUSH

It's not a "holiday" it is a national day of mourning. Federal government will be closed, all other businesses at there own discretion, which means they won't close most likely.

It is a "national day of mourning" and the federal government is shut down. Businesses don't have to let you off. My son has to go to school.
