Imagine how hard it would be to make a fist w/ equal size fingers.
Now imagine trying to fold a pencil w/ your thumb, index, and middle finger the same length.
Fingers not being the same length can from evolution, just like opposable thumbs.
How fingers come into existence are three reasons: cytoplasmic determinants, programmed apoptosis, and morphogenesis + differentiation.

God created human fingers to help bananas spread their seeds (see link below). LOL
Actually, we use different fingers for different purposes. Would it be more advantageous to have a Swiss Army knife with five different "blades" or a regular jackknife with five identical blades?
