The characters don't really age (look) but when Indigo started Ash was 10, indigo took a year.
Ages:
Ash: 11
Misty: 12-13
Brock: 13-14
Orange islands was about six months:
Ash: 11.5
Misty: 12.5-13.5
Brock 13.5-14.5
Jhoto was about a year
Ash: 12.5
Misty: 13.5-14.5
Brock: 14.5-15.5
Hoenn a year, plus battle tower which was a few months:
Ash: 14
Misty: 15-16
Brock: 16-17
May: 10 (starting) About 11.5 at the end
According to the manga May is 11.

Well, people usually don't age in Pokemon. At the beginning, she was 10. And considering that episodes take place very soon after each other, unlike 1 week in reality, the journey through the Hoenn League and the Battle Frontier probably took from 1-2 years. So 12 seems reasonable.
