If you were criticized as a child or teased a lot in school, it could make you very cautious of other people, it could add to shyness... If you were constantly pushed for perfection and that's the only way you got recognition, it could make you grow up into a perfectionist and you can be too hard on yourself.... If you were criticized for your personality, it could lead to a low-self-esteem growing up....

Martin Seligman, MD, argues in the book What You Can Change and What You Can't, that experiences in a child's life are more like snowballs -- it is the continuing, ongoing experiences that are more likely to shape a child, not one-time events. So, the child who likes to sing and is encouraged to sing becomes a singer, while the child who likes to tumble is encouraged to become a gymnast. So it's not just one experience that does it. He also says that it's what other people make of it -- if the parents make a huge fuss over something, it's more likely to affect the child, positive and negative.
