Just a couple of quick questions:

1. Is there any specific way to cut my plants so that I can regrow another plant from the cuttings - or do i just hack away and stick the cuttings right back in the gravel?

2. I was told it is not a good idea to use carbon in the filter if I have plants.... Why?

1. Best get yourself a good book on aquatic plants. There are so many! Some can be propagated from stem cuttings, others from leaf cuttings & others such as The amazon sword & Vallisneria propagate themselves by sending out suckers (like tentacles), producing new plants every few inches.
2. Using carbon in your filter will also remove essential plant nutrients, along with the toxins that you want to get rid of.

1) cut and stick in gravel...some will grow roots and live, some won't...just keep at it

2) activate charcoal (carbon) absorbes a wide array of compounds, including nutrients the plants like. i use carbon filters too and my plants are fine.

ALSO, you can enhance plant growth by adding small amounts of carbon dioxide (either from a cylinder or from mixing yeast and sugar water) by allowing it to bubble into the tank. SMALL AMOUNTS and you won't harm the fish.

1. the cutting depends on what type of plants they are, like tubers, runners, or stem plants... do a little research on the type of plants you have..

2. the carbons absorbs and lock in certain micro numtrients the plants need like iron, boron, maganese etc...
