like in scrabble there is a fixed number of each letter. in literati it seems to be random. is there any pattern in what letters come up?

No, Literati does not follow a pattern. You can get more than 8 'Bs' in a game too, unlike Scrabble. I have played both and personally prefer Scrabble. I play it online everyday at Scrabulous - http://www.scrabulous.com - so check me out!

The tile distribution in Literati isn't fixed, although I believe the algorithm only allows certain ranges...like there won't ever be just 1 E in the entire game, or 14 Q's, there are some sort of limitations programmed into it to reflect somewhat realistic letter frequencies (although they seem to allow WAY too many C's).

The only guarantees are that there will be 4 blanks, and you'll each start with at least one of them (so your opponent will never outblank you 4-0 or vice versa). Also, I believe the total # of letters is fixed at 112 or 120 in Literati - I forget, but I know it's a set number - compared to 100 in Scrabble.
