night i woke up out of my sleep with cramping ..i swithed to my side and the cramping went away. I have had a miscarriage before this definitly doesnt seem like it.. plus i have had 2 ultrasounds already one at 4 weeks and one at 5 weeks. my hcg levels are perfect. Is it ok to sleep on my back???

No offense but some of you people are pretty dense. Im not trying to sleep on my stomach..IM WONDERING IF ITS OK TO SLEEP ON MY BACK SINCE IM HAVING CRAMPING

Although there's no real harm in sleeping on your right side, lying on your left side is actually good for you and your baby: It improves the flow of blood and nutrients to the placenta and it helps your kidneys efficiently eliminate waste products and fluids from your body. That, in turn, reduces swelling in your ankles, feet, and hands. If you train yourself to sleep on your left side early on, you'll have an easier time falling asleep when your belly is bulging later.

During the second half of pregnancy, avoid sleeping on your back, a position that puts the full weight of your uterus on your spine, back muscles, intestines, and the inferior vena cava (the vein that transports blood from your lower body to the heart). Back-sleeping can also put you at risk for backaches and hemorrhoids, inefficient digestion, and impaired breathing and circulation. Lying on your back in the second and third trimester can also cause changes in blood pressure. For some women, it can cause a drop in blood pressure that can make them feel dizzy; for others, it can cause an unwanted increase in blood pressure.

Hi dear. I do understand your concern and I know that when a woman is afraid that she might miscarry she will worry about every little thing.
Still I have to tell you that in all my experience (and I have been doing this off and on for almost 20 years) I have never heard of any correlation between your sleeping position and the incidence of miscarriage.
Nature has protected the uterus in such a way that there is literally no position that a human mother can get in that will hurt her unborn baby. Now there are certainly positions that are less comfortable *for the mother*but none that will hurt the baby.
If you think of the uterus as a very strong balloon filled with water and a tiny, precious little something floating in that water, imagine how hard it would be to hurt that little thing. It would take a blow that would damage YOU to a huge extent to hurt the baby. Beleive me, the position you sleep in can not hurt the baby.
However, if you find a position that is more comfortable for you, like how you mention one position seemed to cause cramping more than another, I would certainly lie in the way that feels best to you. It will not hurt you or the baby, no matter what you decide.
Just a personal note: I gave birth to 4 babies and always slept on my tummy, I missed being able to sleep that way when my tummy would get too big for me to do that any more. Then I would switch to sleeping on my side with my bulging tummy up against my husband so that the baby could keep him awake all night too! lol.....
Try not to worry honey. I am SO sorry about your miscarriage. I can imagine how much that had to hurt. It is very unlikely that what ever caused that miscarriage will happen again. Try to enjoy this pregnancy and even tho one baby can never replace another one I know that the ache in your heart will lessen when you hold this precious baby in your arms.
Take good care of yourself. Get plenty of rest and eat good, nutritious food. I will be thinking of you.

It's fine to sleep on your back or stomach until around the late second trimester. That is when the weight of the baby can put too much pressure on certain veins. Even then if you wake up on your back, you'll be fine. If you are still concerned call your doctor. If they are closed and you would like further advice, I like the babycenter.com website. girl i feel you... i'm 37 weeks and 3 days and i am wide awake and have been sleeping off and on since i laid down at 12:20am. I asked my doctor about this and the only thing he had to say about it was that it was perfectly normal at this point of time during the pregnancy. I guess this is just our bodies way of letting us know the baby is coming real soon!! Good luck!

I slept on my stomache until like 6 months...maybe 6 1/2 months. Now of course not I'm 7 months and 1 week. I sleep on my bck alot. I don't think theres any problem unless your legs go to sleep.

I agree that you can sleep any way that is comfortable for you until about the 2nd tri. I would also suggest that you get a body pillow that you can postion so that you sleep better at night.

They saw that it is ok to sleep on your tummy til you get to the third trimester. Then you want to sleep on your left side so more blood can get to the baby. I sleep on my tummy til 3rd trimester and had a healthy little boy. Congratulations and I recommend the book "What to expect when you are expecting"

I agree with the other answer....eventually your tummy and your back will both not be a comfortable way to sleep and then you have the side...but this early on...sleep anyway you like. (Sleeping on your back becomes uncomfortbale because the weight of the uterus presses against your back and limits circulation to your legs)

you can sleep on your tummy at this point. It might be a little harder when your belly is big....that is mostly when you are supposed to sleep on your side. I slept on my tummy during the first trimester with my 1st child

sleep on your side it's better and put a pillow between your legs for more comfort. That's what I did.
