a month. Is ths an ok amount to save? Just curious what other people save or have left over a month. And if my amount is too much or not enough.

Mia, if you can live on your own, pay all your monthly expenses, and still have anything left over $400, you will make it just fine!

Are you going to be able to save the $5 - 600 a month or is that what's left after bills & rent? Think about gas, food, clothing, entertainment & such. If that's all you have for these things, then no. It's probably not gonna be enough. But if it's what you have left over after these things, you're doing great.

The government advice in UK is that for a reasonably comfortable retirement, you should save in a pension scheme, a percentage of your income equal to half your age when you start.
So, if you start saving at age 24, you should save 12% of your earnings. If you start saving at age 40, you should save 20%. You should also increase the amount (not the %age) in line with average pay increases, or the cost of living at least. In most cases your employer will pay at least some of the above, and so it is not too bad.
PS. Do not be too optimistic about how much you can really save. Have you thought of car expenses, holidays, possible hospitalisation etc.?

I wish I had $500 extra to save a month. You're in good shape I think if you have that and are able to save it. My boyfriend is in pretty bad debt right now and I'm just keeping away from my own debt. So, saving is nice! Congrats to you! :)

Probably enough. Put all of it into savings. Then, when he dumps you, it won't be a total loss. You will at least have shared the costs of the time you were together.
