I was unable to swallow pills when I was young but the technique that helped me is thinking of it as a piece of sweetcorn (may sound strange but really worked as I knew I could swallow more than one piece of sweetcorn when having dinner).

Also when you do swallow (after taking a sip orf water or milk) tilt your head down so your looking at the floor, dont tilt it back as this actually narrows your passage and makes it harder to swallow, then just relax completely, imagine it is as small as a sweetcorn and swallow!

I always had problems, too, when I was a kid. Now what I do is put the pill in my mouth, take a big sip of water, and tilt my head either back or forward (depends on type of pill.) The pill will either float or sink so that it is closer to your throat, and then it's easy to swallow. (If it's a pill that floats in water, bend head forward. If it sinks, tilt head back.) Good luck!

Get some Flinstone vitamins, or Skittles, or M&M's.... Don't make swallowing the goal. Stick your tounge out as far as you can and place the Skittle in the middle.....then just practice holding it on your tounge for as long as you can...practice overcoming that gag reflex. Eventually when you have become a zen master at holding a skittle on your tounge for 20 or 30 seconds. Then simply take a sip of water in the most normal way possible.....and you'll watch that Skittle disappear.

Remember that the mouthfuls you swallow at dinner are likely to be bigger than any tablet. Try breaking the tablet into smaller pieces if it's too big. You might want to try taking it with a thick drink like a fruit smoothie so tablet blends in with the mass.

I find eating something straight afterwards helps it all go down. Like yoghurt.

Its something we all have to learn to do, I was no good at it till I was an adult. Try with lots of water, think I used to practice with really tiny pills or even vitamins till I could do it.
SOme people have a gagging reflex and need professional help, the pharmacist might be the first person to see rather than a psychologist.
Hope this helps

Check with your pharmasist.... as some pills are designed to disolve way down inside you, breaking or powdering them will render them almost ineffective in some cases. your pharmacist will be able to give you instructions.

If you dont like pill's it may be worth asking your doctor or pharmacist if a liquid or suppository alternative is available for you medication.

Put the pill on the tip of your tongue and then take a big mouthful of water it will then follow down naturally and without any discomfort, you shouldnt feel it going down or anything!!! It works without fail everytime (unless you curl your tongue!)
