It has happened before. The last time before this year was in 2004, when both NFC wild card teams, Minnesota and St. Louis, had 8-8 records.

You can look up all the previous years' standings on the source site below.

Yes. This year. The New York Giants are 8 - 8. In 1990, the first year the NFL went to the 12 playoff team format, the New Orleans Saints made it as an 8 - 8 team. Only twice in NFL history have teams with losing records made the playoffs. In 1982, during a strike shortened 9 game season, the NFL adopted a 16 team format for the playoffs. The 4 - 5 Cleveland Browns and the 4 - 5 Detroit Lions both made the playoffs that year. Both teams were eliminated in the first round.

Since 1970, teams with 8 or fewer wins in the playoffs (1982 strike year not included):

1970 - Cincinnati 8-6, Oakland 8-4-2 (both division winners)
1972 - San Francisco 8-5-1 (division winner)
1978 - Minnesota 8-7-1 (division winner)
1985 - Cleveland 8-8 (division winner)
1987 - Minnesota 8-7 (wild card, strike year)
1990 - New Orleans 8-8 (wild card)
1991 - NY Jets 8-8 (wild card)
1999 - Dallas 8-8, Detroit 8-8 (both wild cards)
2004 - Minnesota 8-8,. St. Louis 8-8 (both wild cards)
2006 - NY Giants 8-8 (wild card)

No 7-9 team has made the playoffs in the NFL. So both nicki b and Killer Chick are wrong.

Nicki B... you're wrong. This could have been the first year that a team with an 8-8 record enter the playoffs, but with the Giants win, it didn't happen. Cause if Giants had lost, Green Bay would have been the first team in NFL history to get into the playoffs with a record of 8-8 or less. (Sorry, I meant 7-9 team or less, not 8-8 team)

So the answer to your question is NO.

It does make you ask your self. i think of all the communities can compete, noticeably interior the days of the luxurious tax and earnings sharing it is now happening, the main important subject with those cellar dwellars is the guy up precise no longer desirous to section with the money to hold expertise, in case you seem on those rosters they are sprinkled with Pirates, Royals and Marlins possibilities. If communities have been compelled like they might desire to be to spend a definite share of what they herald then they could be a sprint extra competetive. i'm no longer asserting that anybody must be compelled to furnish A-Rod 30 million from a small marketplace yet what they might desire to be compelled to do is a minimum of attempt to make the attempt to hold expertise. The A's have made a residing the previous few years off making use of adult adult males for 5 years and then figuring out to purchase and merchandising them in the past they are FA elidgable. i'm happy to be sure the hot communities in each and every 365 days, even communities i will in comparison to in any respect (see White Sox, 2005) yet i think of it relatively is sweet for baseball to have distinctive communities each and each 365 days.
