Your question is not clear to me what part of your rock you want to keep, but here are some methods to remove parts of a rock. It is very important to identify the minerals you want to remove and then use an appropriate method.

Chemical Methods - part of a rock can be dissolved by immersing the sample in a liquid that will dissolve the part you do not want. Often hydrochloric acid (HCl) is used to remove calcite or limestone from a sample. I have read where "Caustic Soda" (NaOH, I believe) has been used to clean up feldspar crystals. Knowing what the mineral coating is will determine which approach is best, and testing on a small area is always advised.

Some clay minerals can be just rinsed off or soaked off in water, but if they have been well cemented, then some chemical method is needed.

Lastly, sometimes just using a small dental tool to manually pick away at the "impurities" is an effective way to clean up a sample.

I hope these suggestions help.
