I work part time as a nanny and realized yesterday that my employer told me to come into work Monday last week when I talked to her. I've always have gotten holidays off in the past, but I'm pretty sure she means for me to go into work today for my usual 4 hours, which only means $40.00 even though it's a holiday(she won't give me holiday pay). I feel like I shouldn't go, because she probably meant Monday as in the beggining of the week after the new year holiday, but I refuse to call and ask her what she meant because standing up to her and telling her I shouldn't have to work would be incredibly hard for me to do. I'm sure she'll be calling soon to tell me to come in, would it be wrong of me to say I shouldn't be expected to come in?

If you are prepared to tell her no when she calls, why not do the right thing and call her. Make the "assumption" (that is, sound like you are making the assumption) that she simply mis-spoke, and actually she will be home from work today, and so will not need you to be nanny. That is, after all, the most likely scenario.

If she insists that no, she really does want you today, is it worth quitting the job over it? If so, then do so. Or say, "I'm sorry, but I have plans with my family," and add that you made the assumption she was simply forgetting that Monday was a holiday. If she fires you for it, you can complain to the Labor Relations authorities, if you think it is worth it.

I can understand you feeling, but I, when working, had to work all holidays that fell on my work days, if it fell on my days off, then I got it off. When you take a job you have to go along with what they give you, not want you want, unless it's a mutual agreement. But when not sure you should have asked your employer if she/he wanted you actually come in on Monday. It's possible they didn't realize that it was a holiday. Just be polite when asking and explain nicely that you thought you would have had the day off.
