Ability to cope does play a role in many disorders ranging from depression, to anxiety, to eating disorders, to psychotic disorders. It's not really about not *wanting* to cope with reality, though, but is more about not knowing how to cope or not being able to cope adequately. When one has a predisposition to a chemical imbalance, and when that person hasn't developed healthy ways of coping, then that person is more likely to experience a condition like depression.

Well, there is a lot of evidence backing up that depression is actually a chemical imbalance in the brain. Manic depressive is the same as bi-polar, so I really would classify that along with disorders like schizophrenia and whatnot. The brains of these people are so cluttered with unhealthy thoughts, that medicine is often necessary to clear those out so they begin to work on becoming healthy again. (In general terms) You'll find that alot of people have previously suffered from depression, but have overcome it, are off meds, and are just like you!

Is it not possible that the aforementioned, mental disorders, autism, retardation, paraplegia etc. have nothing at all to do with the Original Sin? Is it not possible that the punishments given were the ones listed, and the rest were not God's doing? Why does everything have to be God's conscious and willful doing. And who are you to judge that autistic men and women were not made exactly as God designed? So they do not fit as normal in this society. That much is true. But they are often much happier than your average human, are they not? Happy, honest, sweet people. As far as mental retardation goes, have you read Flowers for Algernon? Good book if not, teaches a very good lesson. I may not be a Christian but I fail to comprehend why you have decided that all bad things fall blame to God. Why they are a form of uneven punishment. Who has told you that God did not create the natural world with the knowledge it would develop and change itself? Sometimes, the changes are bad. Is that impossible to you? Sorry, I can't quote the bible because I don't find what you're saying plausible. Hope you find the answer you're looking for.

People don't want to do anything about their depression because they're depressed. It's not a choice. Everyone's mood is caused by chemicals in their brain, and in some people these chemicals don't react to outside stimuli the way they should. It's a serious problem and has nothing to do with laziness.
Not wanting to do anything is a symptom of depression, not the cause.

Actually now that you mentioned it I think you might be quite right.Apart from a chemical related process,I guess it could depend in an inability to cope with stress

The mind is a fragile instrument and it seems strange when it refuses to follow known paths; to see truths as others appear to see them.
