I'm considering traveling to Germany this summer as an exchange student, but I want to make sure to get a reputable company.

Check the finances and who runs the agency. Save everything you receive - e-mails, papers, letters, contracts. There are no criminal background checks of host families so be aware. Just because a placement agency has fancy seals and accreditation does not mean it is good. This was invented by the exchange agency programs to make themselves look good but means nothing. It is better to go with a travel agency or wait until you are in college. Call the emergency number and see what happens. In my case, nobody answered for 3 days. People who had a good experience were lucky but the problem is when you have a problem will the student exchange placement agency be there to help you? That's the real question. How will this company help you if you run into trouble? Check out the company with the information here and don't sign any contract until you read it all.

AFS. My family hosted an AFS exchange student and the process went very smoothly, everything worked out great! They are very reliable...I think they are also among the most popular.

How about flying solo?
Why always seek 'organizations', who usually have big political agendas?
I have studied in Europe, China, and Japan. On my own. Never with an organization. Consider that. You will get to see the REAL world. However, it is the 'narrow path', and thus: not easy!
Good luck.

AFS and Youth for Understanding. I have been involved with both of these organizations and they are excellent.
