In our bat book it says: Like other small species of bat, they tend to follow linear features of the landscape on their commute from the roost to feeding areas ..... does this mean they fly in straight lines?

It probably means that they fly up and down rivers/ river banks or along hedge rows, I've seen horseshoes and pipistrelles do that.
