I am just learning myself. Does anyone have any good links?

Because it's still very theoretical - it only exists in the math, like string theory and brane theory. There's really no reason for anybody to need to know about all the abstract theoretical physics lying around until something is proven. And I'm not sure there's anyway to prove m-theory, which pretty much means that we'll never know.

Because its unproven, esoteric and of no relevance to everyday life. Why would people need to know about it?

To get any real grasp of it requires more advanced math than is taught even to undergraduates, and when you have done that it has not one shred of supporting evidence behind it - it is pure (and often facile) speculation.
