I doubt that many med schools will accept you unless you have earned a four year degree from an accredited university.

you can technically get accepted into a med school before starting college through a combined program, where you are accepted as long as you go to that college and get X score on the MCAT (which is usually around a 28...a score you should at least be getting if you want to get into an MD school).

you DO NOT HAVE TO me a "premed major". you can major in anything you would like, although a science would be the easiest. What you do have to do is take the required courses, which usually are general bio, gen chem, organic chem, gen physics, english, and usually some sociology type class.

you also do not have to get straight A's.....altough this would be the best, and what you should aim for. Aim for a gpa of 3.5 and above. I have many A's and a good amount of B's, but no C's......avoid C's, you'll want to consider retaking those classes.

you will take the mcat during the spring of your junior year, and start the AMCAS primary application in June of your junior year. hopefully, you did your mcat before this application, AND you apply EARLY. that's key. there are many many applicants, and it is very important that you beat them out....trust me, i know.

Also, you have to do lots of community service type activities, especially volunteering in a clinical setting and probably shadowing doctors. You will also want to do activities in college such as clubs that can be anything....honor societies, intramurals, sports teams. try to get leadership positions. Do activities and stick with them.

You will also want to go into research. This is really easy to do at your college, and easier to do at bigger colleges. If you get work-study in your financial aid package, you can basically do research anywhere. You most likely won't be doing your own research, but someone else's....unless you get into the school's honor's program and have to write up a thesis (in which case it may still be a post-docs project :-) ).

Talk to a pre-med advisor.

Nothing you did in High School matters. They only care about college and onward. You're on a clean slate. Get amazing grades and be active.

Go to www.studentdoctor.net for more information. Go to the forums. Try not to become addicted.

EDIT:

another technicality that doesn't actually matter much, but i just looked trough my MSAR (med school admissions requirements book)...get one....it lists all the schools and requirements and amount of in state/out of state ppl accepted (this is a HUGE factor in which schools you can apply to). anyway, the schools require 90 semester hours, or 3 years, of undergraduate work to be accepted. which of course means that you'll be applying/interviewing during senior year :-)

No, you cannot go to medical school directly after high school. You must go to a university for at least five years or more, then you can apply to medical school. You'll take the MCAT during the Spring semester of your junior year or the Fall semester of your Senior year.

You will have to take pre-med courses first. Be aware that med school is VERY competitive and if you aren't straight A's right now then you will probably have a hard time. Good luck.

You must start with Pre-Med at a university. Get with a counselor and get started with acceptance criteria for both as early as you can.
