I know that the Plymouth 426-Hemi and the Ford Boss-429 had about 425 hp. The Buick "Stage-1" 455 had about the same as well.

Any others that had 400-plus right from the factory with no modifications?

keith c is exactly right, the "CAMMER" as it was known was a 427 SOHC (single overhead cam) that was made for a select few racers and put in very few cars from the factory for homoligation purposes. it was NOT underrated for insurance and was well over 600hp in the late 1960's -and NO this is NOT the 429 "BOSS" which is a hemi with OHV !

Thats hard to tell because most of the muscle cars listed their horsepower to 425HP due to insurance reasons. The 426 Hemi had like 600 HP, the Chevy 427 had way more than 425 as well. All those big 400CI engines had well over 425HP.

This is an interesting question and one not easy to answer. During the muscle car ear (let us say 1960's to early 1970's) many engines were underrated because of insurance reasons. The L- 88 corvette is one and was rated at 430HP but on the dyno it produced about 560HP, the ford Boss 429 was also one of those underrated, thus, as said, it is difficult to actually name who was top car.

If I found a girl who knew about cars, I would probably fall in love with her. And I prefer her to be driving sports cars, not muscle cars. I myself just do not like muscle cars because of their poor handling capabilities and heavy weight and low top speeds. All they really have is quick acceleration.
