yup, it's because of all the dark shadows in my opinion. just think of the image of Nosfuratu coming down the stairs. Great stuff!

Depends on who did them. Some really are. Some aren't as good as modern ones though. It is more about the movie. Oh and don't put a modern movie in B&W just to try and make it look better.

No, they look so fake. But I think that some of them have better plots than the modern one's. But I'm not really scared by scary movies. It's just the blood and guts that creep me out.

No, because the characters are not that frightening. Today though it is more gory so the movie is trying with all its might to make you scream. Also, monsters are becoming more intelligent and many more people are more afraind of the unkown than ever.

Not all, but some where they make intelligent use of shadows, sets and music. Old Hitchcock movies are especially frightening!

They definitely are. The new ones have too many special effects and blood and nothing scary like the old hitchcock films/.
