The advantage of using a kickstart is as stated, less drain on the battery, plus you'll look totally badazz doing it, heh. Older bikes didn't have starters, wasn't standard on a Harley till 1966. May have been standard sooner on other makes, not sure.
Older bikes got their spark from a Magneto (no not the villian X-man) a bike could run without a battery. If a bike is tweaked good on the timing they'll start on the first or second kick.
And no kickstarting has nothing to do with reducing the amount of black smoke, thats in carburation.

Don E got it first time, clean out the air filter, that should fix your black smoke problem,I would say from what you have described this problem came on gradual, if not as others have suggested you have carb issues which i don't think you should touch but get some professional help, it will cost you less than having to replace lost parts. The kick-start, was for starting all motorcycles till people got lazy, and are a godsend when you have a flat battery, some early Honda's came out with both, the kick-start was used for cold start to help keep the charge in the battery as they only had a low charge rate and it took a while to charge the battery

kickstart is mostly for race purposes for the sake of saving weight. it can also serve as a back up or some electric start bikes. there really isnt an advantage to using it.

1.If your battery is drained of charge, it will may get your engine started. 2.It is the only way to start pre 65 Harleys. 3.No, leaning out your fuel mixture or new rings, etc, will help with the black smoke.

Eisen_Kreuz hit the nail on the head about kick-starting.
Black smoke is a sign that engine is running rich (too much fuel).

1&2.Use it only if you do not have electric start. 3.Black smoke is a rich fuel condition. If this condition is constant even after warm up ,you may want to go to a smaller main jet to get more power.Or try cleaning your air filter .
