You need one that will monitor traffic both way. Windows firewall only monitors inbound traffic. If a virus was able to get in, or spyware, the windows firewall will allow it to send information out. A good firewall that works right out of the box is from Comodo. Here is some info from their site.

The only firewall that doesn't leak
Unfortunately, most firewalls leak. But Comodo's Firewall is unique in that it passes all known leak tests to ensure the integrity of data entering and exiting your system. Comodo has put firewall through all kinds of sophisticated tests to ensure its firewall powerful enough to ward off these attacks with default settings. No other firewall has had to work this hard. Take this test yourself.

use the firewall embedded in windows XP - you paid for it with the operating system so in effect it is free

alternately ZoneAlarm is a good free stand alone firewall. It has been around for some time.

for free anti spyware choose Ad-Aware SE personal
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/
again it has been around for sometime and is well proven to work

for free anti-virus I use Avira AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic
http://www.free-av.com/
It has all the features and is as good as any commercial program. Although recently they have started prompting you to buy the commercial product whn it aujtomatically updates, you can ignore that message. I have been using it for years with no problems.

ZoneAlarm is one of the best firewalls out there, is easy to use, and is entirely free.

You can download it here: http://tinyurl.com/zko8w

Optionally, you can download the 14-day free trial of any of the other versions of ZoneAlarm, which will revert to the basic, free, firewall-only version after the trial is over, which is not much of a hassle, and you get those two weeks of anti-whatever else you choose.

Zone Alarm is good. But so is the Windows Firewall that's already built into your system if you're running XP.

If you want a firewall appliance and have a spare PC to dedicate to that function, have a look at IPCop. http://www.ipcop.org
