My laptop is 20GB, but it lists the space as 10gb max on the C drive and 8.6gb max on the D drive. Since the minimum space required is 10gb to burn a DVD (with an external burner), would I be able to burn with a total of 10gb free space between the combined drives or would the space have to be on one drive (I don't know if the C and D drives are considered separate or not). I realize other factors would need to be considered also. Any information is greatly appreciated.

Your physical 20G drive is partitioned (divided) into two logical drives of 10G each (less some minor overhead bits) into your C and D drives. They are totally separate.

You can burn a 1k file (very small) to a DVD if you want, but keep in mind that when you burn information to a DVD (or CD), the process stores a complete duplicate of what you are burning to the default drive first. This is usually the C drive. So if you want to burn 1M to a DVD, you will need at least 1M available on your hard drive for this tempory image file.

If you are backing up your entire C or D drives, you can only backup your files in chunks in sizes of available space.

C: and D: are separate partitions on the same hard drive.

To burn a dvd you only need about 4GB of free space (or the amount of data the dvd has)

So yes you can! You could be able to store up to 4 dvd's on your hard drive... still better you write them one after another.

Minimum space is closer to 4.7gb. . . but yeah, as long as you have a burner attached, as well as files to burn, it will work. . .
