Outragious amounts of unclaimed money or small investments with the idea of very large returns seem to come from sources in Nigeria. Only after they have your attention do they then ask you to pay some high fees or multiple fees to pay for processing of the papers. If you send money you will never see it again.

Another skam is the woman or man who meet you via the dating and match making services. Having never met you they confess to being madly in love with you and are ready to commit to marriag if you can send them money to help feed them or pay high fees so they can get a visa or passport so they can come to you. Often they send pictures of a very attractive person to really capture your attention and imagination. Send money and they will ask for more or come up with reasons for you to send more.

These kind of scams I have heard of and those who tell of them seem to say they come from sources in Nigeria .

This sure is in the wrong category for this question.

Have been wondering the same about Nigeria & supposed English bank tie-ins. Do believe spammers in the US inspired them. Most profitable scams are these mock mailings from banks, credit card companies asking you to verify your account. If folks quit acknowldedging their e-mails and would get more on the phone to assess the legitimacy of these frauds there would be less profit for them and more peace of mind.

I don't think that all of them come from Nigeria. They could just be using Nigeria as a front from some other country that they maybe working out of. I have heard of this happening in Russia, Mexico, China etc.... Not just Africa. Most people do not think before they act on such a "wonderful" offer and when they realize that they have been had they get mad instead of checking all of the sources. My mother always told me that nothing in life is for free. I work at a bank and see many elderly people come into the bank with checks that are part of a lottery scam from Canada or Australia. It is a sad thing but it happens all the time.

I have heard of many many other scams coming out of Nigeria, they even have a popular music video over there about taking money from Americans. It is a business to them. People hear about something that is too good to be true, and fall for it. They let their greed overtake their common sense and think it is actually possible to get something for nothing. The funny thing is that it is usually high-class, well off people that fall for it. I saw a special on it on TV. Lesson to be learned, if it is free, it most likely is too good to be true, or comes with a greater cost. The best things in life have to be earned.

I think it is because they rely on people knowing nothing about Nigeria.
