i want to be able to listen to a piece of music and recognize the chord changes. I want to be able to identify all the chords in a song by ear. How do I do that?

My friend, it takes a skilled musician to do that, it will take time.

First you must learn the basic theory of music, and chord structure, tonic, dominant, subdominant, the first stuff root, 3, 5,

all that will help you know mentally what it is, but to be able to hear and know what they are and what the difference is will take time.

Depending on how God made you that may take awhile or not as long as some people.

If you have a piano, practice the piano with lesson books.

If your still in school, join the band, the choir, the piano class, one of those three, the piano class is your best bet then choir then band.

Take private lessons for piano or something.

It is possible to learn on your own but you have to have a working knowledge of how music is built- the technical side.

Begining chord knowledge is easy, but it will get more complicated, but you must have a well rounded knowledge of music theory in addition to chord knowledge or else it's useless to know that stuff.

Train yourself once you know these things, with a piano, or a song that you have the music to and listen to it over and over, learn to hear the chord types in your head.

Practice.

That's all I can think of right now.

Hope this helps.

Remember it's nothing you can learn overnight.

First you gotta know what chords in different scales sound like.Unless you know about the chords, you'll not recognize them. Most songs follow a rhythm pattern that go with the vocals. For e'g if a chord C is played,it is likely that the next chord will be in the same scale of C.
You'll also need a lot of practise and concentration too seek out the chords used.
You can go to ultimate-guitar.com to know more about finding chords and scales.

One of the easiest ways I learned, is, know each note of the guitar neck, listen to the bass guitar in the music, on easy songs when he changes notes on the bass, it changes chords, figure out what note he went to, and that's usually what chord it is!! It takes a lot of time and listening, but if you like music, and playing, its worth it!! You don't have to be a guitar player, it works the same on the keyboard!!

the best way i find is to play , sing or even hum along with the piece you are trying to recognize.it takes along time to train by ear .I also found tuning by ear really helped.
