A nocturnal emission is an ejaculation of semen experienced during sleep. It is also called a "wet dream", an involuntary orgasm, or simply an orgasm during sleep.
Nocturnal emissions are most common during teenage and early adult years. However, nocturnal emissions may happen any time after puberty. They may or may not be accompanied by erotic dreams. It is possible to wake up during the ejaculation, or to just stay asleep during the ejaculation.
The source of nocturnal emissions is not entirely known, but it is associated with the fact that males typically get an erection often during sleep (this is called nocturnal penile tumescence). A common theory, tacitly assumed by many researchers, is that they are the direct result of the stimulation caused by either erotic dreams, or memories of waking sexual activities. For this reason the term wet dream is also used figuratively for something very pleasurable but often imagined. However, there has been little experimental evidence to support this theory, and many men claim to have had nocturnal emissions without accompanying erotic dreams.
Another common theory is that wet dreams are the way the body disposes of "built-up" semen, clearing the carcinogenic fluids. However, such a theory is unclear as studies showed that there was no significant difference observed in wet dream frequency between men who ejaculated frequently while awake and those who never did. Furthermore, according to the Singapore Science Centre, sperm cells "degenerate and are reabsorbed (broken down and absorbed by the body) in the seminiferous tubules if they are not ejaculated." The occurrence of wet dreams is not so closely related to the absence of other sexual outlets as was once thought.-

When boys begin puberty, ejaculating while asleep is quite ormal, since their sperm needs to be drained. When they are full of semen, it lets go. Nocturnal emissions or wet dreams can range from seeping semen or pre-ejaculate to an actual orgasm.
After a boy starts reular masturbation these wet dreams decrease in number. Some men continue to have them throughout their lives, most do not, or at least not too often. Some of that has to do with how often they have sex or marturbate, as the male body must get rid of the built up semen.
At 49, I have an occasional one, but seeing as I am married and have a regular sex life, they are rare.
From about 11-12 to about 16-18 they are pretty common.
Hope that answers your?
Happy New year!

Really a misnomer--guys in their teens, 20s, even 30s and 40s may wake up in the morning having ejaculated in their sleep or secreted large amounts of pre-ejaculate, the clear cowpers fluid that often precedes ejaculate. Most guys report never being aware of the emissions, they just wake up wet, or in most cases dry and crusty. Ejaculation is rare, more than likely most "wet dreams' are the clear pre-ejaculate.
Guess they are called wet dreams because of the assumption that a guy has to have an erotic dream in order to get wet. Not true, just really sexually healthy guys tend to secrete excess fluid, and since guys have 5 or 6 erections during sleep, it is a good time discharge some fluid.

IF a man does not have sex or masturbate for awhile the reproductive fluids build up in the different glands. This needs to be released. At night a man will usually have about seven or eight erections. During one of these erections he may have an erotic dream and he will have an uncontrolable ejaculation. After the semen shoots out the man usually wakes up with a big wet spot on pjs and bed and has to clean up. It is normal, healthy and okay to happen and it happens from the beginning of puberty on and depends on a mans sexual activity.

It's where a guy has an erotic dream that is accompanied by him ejaculating while sleeping. He wakes up to find himself all wet & sticky, & feeling great but a little confused the first time it happens. Embarassed, he changes the sheets & his underwear.
