Because a lot of people are short-sighted nimrods who have no opinion of their own, so they parrot what they hear other people say. Most of the tiime, those other people are short-sighted nimrods as well.

Because in comparison to a car, an SUV is a gas guzzler! 18 mpg is good for an SUV, not in comparison to your average car which usually get up to 26 easily. Case in point: my Toyota Echo gets between 36 and 40 mpg. In comparison to my ride your spewing fumes like nobodies business.

They are gas guzzlers, not jeeps, 10 to 12 miles to the gallon is hard on gas.
Most folks are not thinking jeeps, or small SUV's. Its the Lincolns, Caddys, Expiditions, Hummer. etc.

It's something people label, as they for the most part are considered excessive for general use.

I get 5 km to the liter with my truck. It's a daily driver. But utilitarian. Most people here just look at it and compliment it.

Where I'm from big gas guzzling trucks and SUV's are the norm. 3/4 ton and 1 ton trucks as daily drivers, almost out number the cars.

Your right... only the V-8 get prro mileage in the city. I have a Durango with the 360 and I get 18 on the highway. I aslo have an explorer that gets 33 on the highway with the 4.0 V-6 its hard to believe but I can go over 500 miles to a full tank in my explorer.

SUVs are heavier and have larger tyres and hence look like they need more power to get their mass of metal moving. They MUST drink more fuel, for a comparable engine size with a sedan/ saloon.

lets face it ,,SUV,, are harder on fuel than say a small car,but there is no comparison between the too of them.
people who buy or can afford an SUV aren't buying them for fuel economy there buying them for comfort, lots of room,4wd,etc
you want fuel economy go get a smart car
i think the only people that com-plane about them can,t afford one anyways so what does it matter.
