To feel control of the situation, and possibly to feel that they are better than others. To make themselves look good, in their sick little way.

Sometimes it can be a problem they consciously cannot control. It just is part of the way they are. Often they don't actually realize it.
But then again, there are those who get pleasure from being deceptive.

Good Question

Every individual is basically pure, truthful, peaceful, harmonious ... etc. but these qualities are over clouded and layered with many artificial attitudes and negative tendencies. Initially, there will be hitch or hindrance from inside when the innerself is getting diverted to negativity, but when once these negative attitudes and tastes become common, then signals of inner self are neglected .... in other words, they are deceiving themselves.

When they are in a negative state and has harmful attitudes, they tend to spread that same type of environment and feelings with others (sometimes knowingly and sometimes unknowingly). Because of ego, hatred, jealousy etc. They can't digest someones progress or happiness, in fact they also feel insecured by seeing others progress, so they try to spread negative or deceptive feelings.

By deceiving someone they feel (or assume) that they have got some victory or they have achieved some thing special .... because negative mind can enjoy negative feelings only (just an example : pig enjoys to play and eat in gutter and why not cows or deers ?)

Similarly by telling lies, they get the subtle intoxication of illusionary and false achievement

However, this state of mind can eventually bring more tensions, internal stress and internal dis-satisfaction or depression or aggression attracting more failures in life.

By adopting good practices, positive thinking, helping nature, enjoying the experience of inner self ... etc. one can slowly achieve a high state of real satisfaction and dignity and success.

I had a neighbor once who fancied himself an artist who said, "The truth has no appeal for me over an interesting lie." He lied to make himself more interesting, and his "sugar daddy" let him do it, laughing with amusement. He said he didn't need to believe anything the young man said anyway, so it didn't matter.

Then he found out he'd gotten AIDS from the young "artist." Turned out it did matter that the guy was a habitual liar.

My adoptive father was that way his whole life. His parents positioned him behind his sister throughout his life and I believe his negative traits stemmed from his childhood experiences of rejection. I suppose in his mind the person he was never measured up for his parents, so he tried to live a life that was in reality a lie that he fabricated to mask his rejected reality.
